Summary

During the summer of 2023 The Circular Factory collaborated with the Insitute of Advanced Achitecture of Catalonya (IAAC) to research the potential of tree forks - normally discarded during industrial lumber processing- to create structures. A worfklow using 3D scanning, generative design and robotic fabrication was developed. The process starts by scanning the discarded forks and through an evolutionary process they find their best position in order to create a structure. The trees are progressively cleaned as the structure goes up, ending with a roof structure made using dimensional lumber. Joinery and connections are robotically cut directly on the 3D scanned forks minimising waste whilst optimising structural performance.
